The head of forecasting at Met Éireann has said that Storm Brendan is on target and should clear the country this afternoon, as gusts of over 130km/h have been recorded.
More than 48,000 homes, farms and businesses have been affected by the storm, according to the ESB. It also says that the damage is mainly due to fallen trees on overhead lines because of high winds.
The counties most impacted by the power outages include Galway, Limerick, Kerry, Cork and Donegal.

LONDON (AP) _ Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a new role: chancellor at Queen's University in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland.
The university said Thursday that Clinton was appointed to a five-year term in the largely ceremonial post.
