DUBLIN — Ireland braced for weeks of political uncertainty after a stunning election in early February early that saw the Irish Republican Army-linked party Sinn Féin — long shunned by its bigger rivals — take the largest share of votes.

DUBLIN (AP) — Ireland faced political turmoil Sunday as an exit poll from the weekend’s parliamentary election suggested that Sinn Fein, a left-wing party committed to reunification of the island, finished in a virtual dead heat with the two parties that have governed since the country won independence almost a century ago.

Galway 2020 event cancelled due to storm warning

The opening ceremony for Galway's year as European Capital of Culture has been cancelled due to expected bad weather.

In a statement, Galway 2020 said it was extremely disappointed to announce the cancellation but that the decision had been made in the interests of public safety.

The company set up to oversee the year-long European designation said it had been in constant contact with relevant authorities overnight and this morning.

RTE News: Ireland weather Saturday 2/8- Warnings issued as Storm Ciara to bring 120km/h gusts

 

Friday, Feb 6- 

Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange wind warning for counties Donegal, Mayo and Galway, with Storm Ciara forecast to bring gusts of up to 120km/h.

The warning for Donegal and Mayo will come into effect from midday tomorrow (Saturday, Feb 8), and will last until 4pm that afternoon.

The warning for Galway will come into place from 1pm tomorrow and last until 6pm that evening.

The forecaster has also issued Status Yellow wind and rainfall warnings for the entire country through this weekend.

GALWAY 2020 OPENING CEREMONY

Beginning in the farthest reaches of Galway on St Brigid’s Day, fiery celebrations will erupt in towns and villages across the county in keeping with the ancient traditions of the Irish Celtic calendar.

The ceremony will travel across the county from 2 to 7 February encompassing An Spidéal, Tuam, Ballinasloe, Clifden, Portumna and Athenry, before a final installment at South Park in Galway City on 8 February.
