A majority of United States Senators voted 68-29 to confirm the nomination of Mayor Martin Walsh as the US Secretary of Labor on Monday, March 22.
Among those who voted for Walsh from the GOP ranks were Sen. Mitt Romney, Sen. Susan Collins and Sen.Lindsay Graham.
He resigned via a letter to the City Clerk Monday night. an action that elevated City Council President Kim Janey to the role of acting Mayor. Walsh traveked to the nation's capitol Tuesday monring to be sworn-in.
Janey is expected to be inaugurated during a ceremony on Wednesday.
Boston City Councillor Liz Breadon joined a group of her colleagues to raise the flag or Ireland at Boston City Hall last week. A native of Northern Ireland, Breadon emigrated to Boston in 1995 and has held positions at Boston Medical Center, The Home for Little Wanderers, and Perkins School for the Blind.

Walsh reached a majority (51 votes) at 5:52 p.m. Among those who voted for Walsh from the GOP ranks were Sen. Mitt Romney, Sen. Susan Collins and Sen.Lindsay Graham.The final vote was 68 yeas -29 nays.
The mayor planned to speak to reporters in Boston during press conference after the vote at Faneuil Hall.
